Review: The Mad and the Bad

This utterly bonkers French noir about a young female outpatient who goes on the lam with a twelve-year-old brat to avoid being offed by a hitman hired by the boy’s uncle owes equally to David Goodis and Claude Chabrol.

Jean-Patrick Manchette provides little exposition in this ferocious narrative so it’s hard to discern why these people do the rotten things they do.  Julie is a self-reliant heroine thirty years ahead of her time who we cheer on throughout this compact propulsive stunner.
